Digestion and absorption of lipids begin in the small intestine. Fats (lipids) are broken down with the help of bile and enzymes. Bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, emulsifies fats into smaller droplets, increasing their surface area. Pancreatic lipase, an enzyme, then breaks triglycerides into free fatty acids and monoglycerides.

These smaller molecules form micelles, which are absorbed by the intestinal cells (enterocytes). Inside the cells, they are reassembled into triglycerides and packaged into chylomicrons. These chylomicrons enter the lymphatic system and eventually reach the bloodstream, where lipids are transported to tissues for energy or storage.
