It is a form of electrophoresis used for the separation of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) fragments based on their size. Negatively charged DNA/RNA migrates via the pores of an agarose gel in the direction of the positively charged cease of the gel while an electrical cutting-edge is applied, with smaller fragments migrating faster.

The ensuing bands can then be visualized using ultraviolet (UV) mild. RNA,1 however, has a tendency to shape secondary structures – on occasion multiple unique species for the equal fragment – that have an effect on the way it migrates.
