The nose, a central feature of the human face, is a complex structure with both aesthetic and functional importance. It plays a vital role in respiration, olfaction, and vocal resonance. The anatomy of the nose can be divided into external and internal components.

Anatomy of Nose PPT: External, Internal, Functions
External Nose
The external nose is the visible part of the nasal structure, shaped like a pyramid. It consists of a bony and cartilaginous framework covered by skin and soft tissue. The upper portion is supported by the nasal bones, while the lower portion is made up of flexible cartilages, including the lateral and alar cartilages. The external nares, or nostrils, provide entry points for air into the nasal cavity.

Internal Nose
The internal nose includes the nasal cavity, which extends from the nostrils to the nasopharynx. It is divided into two halves by the nasal septum, a vertical structure made of cartilage and bone. Each half of the nasal cavity contains three bony projections called turbinates (inferior, middle, and superior). These turbinates increase the surface area for air filtration, warming, and humidification.
Nasal Mucosa
The nasal cavity is lined with mucosa that performs various functions. The respiratory mucosa, with its ciliated cells and mucus-secreting glands, traps and expels dust and microorganisms. The olfactory mucosa, located in the upper part of the nasal cavity, contains specialized cells responsible for the sense of smell.
Blood Supply and Innervation
The nose has a rich blood supply from branches of the facial artery and maxillary artery, contributing to its ability to warm inhaled air. It is innervated by the trigeminal nerve, which provides sensory input, and the olfactory nerve, which enables the sense of smell.

Functions of the Nose
The nose is essential for breathing, smelling, and filtering air. Its structural design ensures optimal airflow while protecting the lower respiratory tract from foreign particles.
